Relaxing Things to Do in La Paz: A Slow Travel Guide
Mar, 18 2026 || 10 MIN READ
It’s amazing how many different ways there are to travel.
If you're looking for relaxing things to do in La Paz, taking a slow afternoon can be one of the most rewarding experiences in the city.
Working here in La Paz and talking with travelers almost every day, this becomes more and more clear to me. No two trips look the same. Some people travel fast, trying to see as much as possible. Others prefer to stay longer in one place, slowly getting to know the city, the cafés, the markets, and the small routines of daily life. And even if you already know your favorite way of traveling, it’s always interesting to listen to how others do it.
Sometimes a short conversation with another traveler can suddenly give you a completely new idea for your next trip, a different route, or a place you hadn’t even considered before. Travel has no single right way. And maybe that’s exactly what makes it so inspiring.
Yesterday, three girls came up to me at Café del Mundo. I had seen them many times during their days in La Paz, often sitting in the café, reading, journaling, or just relaxing. Now it was their last day in the city, and they came to say goodbye before leaving. I asked them how their time in La Paz had been, and they laughed a little and said, half joking: “Great… we mostly just spent time here in the café.” Of course, that wasn’t completely true. They had explored a bit as well. But that small comment actually inspired three things for me.
First, it inspired a reel about that little conversation that you can see here in the blog post. Second, it reminded me again how differently we all travel. Some people arrive in a city and want to explore every corner, every viewpoint, every market. Others need something completely different for a few days, slower mornings, long coffee breaks, journaling, washing clothes, and simply recharging their energy after weeks or months on the road. And the third thing it inspired is actually the theme of this blog post. Because even in a city as energetic and sometimes hectic as La Paz, slowing down for a few hours can be surprisingly beautiful. You don’t need a whole week of rest, sometimes just one slow afternoon in the middle of your trip can completely change the feeling of your day. So in this post, I want to share a few ideas for how to enjoy a slower afternoon in La Paz.
The Beautiful Chaos of La Paz
La Paz is a city that doesn’t move very quietly. The streets are full of sound, traffic, market voices, music from a passing minibus, someone selling fruit on the corner. The city has a kind of beautiful chaos that pulls you into it. And you want to be part of it. Feel it, see it, enjoy it. Catch the bus the local way, step straight out into the traffic jam, bargain for fruit in the market, zigzag through cars to cross the street, listen to street artists singing on a busy corner. It’s exciting, intense, and sometimes a little overwhelming, in a good way.
Most travelers want to see as much as possible when they arrive. Markets, viewpoints, cable cars, street food, museums, new neighborhoods. And La Paz gives you a lot of energy to keep exploring. But at some point, often in the middle of the afternoon, you might feel it. The moment when your body and mind ask for a small pause. Not to escape the city, but to sit inside it for a while.
To listen to the traffic instead of walking through it. To watch people passing by. To order a juice or coffee and simply sit down for a moment. Maybe you open your notebook and write down a few thoughts from the day. Small moments you noticed. A conversation in the market. A strange street name. A view you didn’t expect. Because sometimes the best way to understand a city like La Paz is not by rushing through it, but by stopping long enough to really see it. And sometimes also, in a city that moves as intensely as La Paz, one slow afternoon can be one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
How to Enjoy a Slow Afternoon in La Paz
The best moments of a trip can appear when you stop trying to see everything. So if you feel that moment arrive, when your mind asks for a pause, here are a few simple ways to enjoy a slower afternoon in the city.
Sit down in a café and watch the city
One of the best ways to understand La Paz is simply to sit down for a while and watch the movements of the streets. Order a drink, slow down, and observe the city around you.
• The Writers Coffee Shop & Bookstore – a cozy and quiet café where you can sit with a book, enjoy a good coffee, and take a calm break in the center of La Paz.
• Café del Mundo – a cozy place where travelers often pause for coffee, fresh juices, and conversations about the city, traveling, and new adventures.
• Mercado Lanza cafés – simple coffee spots and small street stalls, coffee or traditional corn drink api with fried pastries filled with cheese, a very local afternoon stop.
Take a slow walk through a neighborhood
Not every walk in La Paz needs a destination. Sometimes the best way to explore is wandering through the streets and seeing what appears around the next corner. Stop where something looks interesting, step into that small shop, notice the street art, and enjoy the moments around you.
• Sopocachi streets – cafés, old houses, street art, and a relaxed neighborhood atmosphere.
• Calle Jaén – a colorful historic street that feels like stepping into another time.
• Mercado Rodríguez surroundings – lively streets where everyday city life is always happening.
Spend some quiet time in a park
Sometimes the best pause in a busy city is simply sitting in a bit of green space. Parks give you a chance to slow down, breathe, and notice the small moments around you.
• Jardín Botánico – a peaceful green corner where you can walk slowly and escape the noise of the city for a moment.
• Parque Madre Tierra – a calm space to sit down, read, or write while watching daily life pass by.
• Parque Urbano Central – a larger park, not the greenest but full of activity, with small soccer and basketball courts where locals gather to relax or play, you should ask to join!
End the afternoon with a view
La Paz always rewards you with incredible viewpoints. Ending the day with a wide view of the valley is a beautiful way to slow down before the evening begins.
• Mirador Killi Killi – one of the best panoramic views over the entire city and Illimani.
• Mirador Montículo – a charming small viewpoint in Sopocachi, perfect for a quiet sunset moment.
• Mi Teleférico at golden hour – sometimes the best way to see La Paz is simply from above.
Because in a city like La Paz, travel is not only about moving fast from place to place. Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow down just enough to really notice where you are!
