Packing for La Paz can be confusing
The weather changes fast, the altitude affects how you feel, and what works in other cities doesn’t always work here. If you're wondering what to wear in La Paz, this guide will help you pack smart and stay comfortable while exploring the city.
Once, I was a full-time backpacker, not a stylish one, but a comfortable one. No matching in mind, just smart, easy clothes that worked. One day, during a work trip through Peru, my group and I arrived at a beach campsite where we’d stay for a few days. Sun, cold drinks, fresh grilled fish on plastic chairs in the sand, surfers riding the waves. Pure peace. A well-earned pause from intense travel days.
Well… almost.
The owner of the campsite, a German woman who had left everything behind to live by the sea, was anything but peaceful. She came from a high-end designer family in Germany, yet here she was, running a small beach camp. Still, she carried that same intensity with her. Every little mistake triggered loud, sharp reactions that echoed across our otherwise calm oasis. My daily conversations with her, organizing things for the group, became my small moment of stress.
Then one afternoon, everything shifted, for a moment at least.
I was sitting with a book and a drink when she came over, calm for the first time. She told me about her past, how being part of the Hugo Boss family meant she never really had another option than to design clothes. She had created pieces for world stars that honestly impressed me. But she needed a break, and after many turns, she ended up here, alone, on a beach in Peru. I enjoyed that quiet conversation.
Then suddenly, she stood up, looked at me sharply, and said:
“You, young, beautiful, traveling the world… and dressed so incredibly bad. What a shame. Life is too short to dress like you.”
She paused, still serious.
“One day, when you’re a bit more mature… I can only say Burberry. That’s for you. You will understand.”
And just like that, her calm moment was definitely over. She turned and left.
I see travelers here in La Paz every day, all dressed so differently, in so many styles, and I love it, how differently we all choose to travel. But I’m also sure that before all of us packed those clothes we’re now walking around in on the streets in the city, most of us had a moment of doubt, wondering if we got it right. So today, I want to share a few tips on how La Paz really works when it comes to weather, style, and what actually makes sense to wear.
Dressing for La Paz: Where Weather, Altitude, and Adventure Shape Your Style
When traveling anywhere in the world, packing clothes can sometimes feel a bit confusing, but usually, there’s a logic to it. If you’re heading to a beach destination, it’s easy, you think light, simple, warm days and soft evenings.
But if you are going to La Paz, you quickly realize you have to think twice, because this city sits high in the mountains and the weather shifts constantly. The air feels different, and your day can move from cold to warm to windy within hours, all while you’re exploring one of the most adventurous urban landscapes in the world, where plans change quickly. You might hike to viewpoints, jump into spontaneous ideas or head out on bigger adventures without planning to. And even if you can rent or buy things, it’s not always simple, especially for Europeans or taller travelers, since sizing often runs smaller and shorter, so what you pack matters more than you think.
La Paz doesn’t really follow rules, and neither should your wardrobe. You wake up in sharp mountain air, layer up, step outside and within an hour the sun feels stronger than expected, making you question if you overdressed, before a cloud comes in and the wind reminds you why you didn’t. Dressing here becomes less about style rules and more about enjoying your day comfortably. There’s something beautiful in that, because you stop overthinking and start dressing for moments instead. A slow coffee in the sun in Sopocachi, long walks on steep streets where comfort suddenly matters more than anything and quiet pauses above the city as the light shifts and you pull on a jacket again. La Paz teaches you that style isn’t about perfection; it’s about being ready for anything while still feeling like yourself.
Dressing Smart in a City That Keeps You Guessing
Even if you only spend a few days in La Paz, or even if you live here for years, you never fully understand the weather and it will always surprise you. So more than looking right, especially when you’re out exploring, it becomes about being prepared while still feeling like yourself, and these are the pieces and ideas that truly make a difference when you’re in La Paz.
Layers are essential – Temperatures change quickly | Always have something you can easily take on and off.
Bring a light jacket – Even on sunny days | A light jacket or sweater is essential.
Wear comfortable shoes – Streets are steep and uneven | Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable because the city is steep and you will walk more than you expect.
Use sun protection – High altitude = stronger sun | Sun protection matters more than you think because of the altitude, so bring sunglasses, sunscreen or a cap.
Prepare for wind – Avoid very light clothing | Be ready for wind, avoid anything too light unless you want it flying around.
Choose day-to-night outfits – You won’t always go back to change | Choose outfits that work from day to night since you won’t always go back to change.
Keep it effortless – La Paz style is relaxed and natural.
Pack one outfit you love – For special moments | Bring one outfit that makes you feel really good, not for others but for yourself, because some moments here deserve it.

Just a short fun fact:
You can experience four seasons in one day; mornings feel like winter, midday like summer, and by evening you’re back to layering up again.
Comfort Over Perfection, Still
That’s a little glimpse into how the weather works here in the Andes, and as you’ve probably noticed, it doesn’t really work at all, at least not like in other places where you can more or less figure out the forecast for the day.
The years have passed since I met that lady on the beach in Peru, and I do think I’ve become more mature in some ways, but I still travel the same way at heart, choosing comfort over perfection, exploring in clothes that help me move, not just look good, and even if I feel a little more grown into my own style, I’m still waiting for that Burberry moment to happen:)
