Sopocachi vs Centro (Best Areas for Travelers)

La Paz is a city of contrasts, different areas that each feel like their own little world. One of the questions I get all the time before people arrive is: Where should I stay? And honestly, I get it. Even if you’ve already booked something, there’s often that little doubt… did I choose the right area for my trip?

If you’re wondering where to stay in La Paz, Bolivia, this guide will help you choose between two of the most popular areas for travelers.

So today, I want to dive a bit deeper into two of the most popular areas for travelers. They’re almost next to each other, but the vibe? Completely different.

Both have many great options, but depending on your mood and the kind of experience you’re looking for, one might suit you much better than the other.

And one more thing before we dive in, we’re just a few days away from Easter. If you’re in La Paz or Bolivia, make sure to read last week’s blog, where I share more about this beautiful celebration here in the city. Read here!

So let’s break it down: Sopocachi vs. the center of La Paz. Let’s go.

Sopocachi or Centro – Two Sides of La Paz

The City Center – Raw, Lively, and Full of Movement

Let’s start with the center, because this is where most travelers naturally end up moving around.

Around Sagárnaga, Linares, and the San Francisco Church, everything is moving. You’ll meet travelers everywhere, people hanging out, planning their next stop, or just taking a break between adventures. Languages from all over the world mix together, creating that social, backpacker-style atmosphere that’s easy to step into. Souvenir streets, small shops, and travel agencies blend into everything else, making it easy to just wander without a plan.

But what makes it really special is how quickly it shifts. Walk just a few blocks away, and you’re suddenly in a completely different side of La Paz. The streets turn more local, markets appear, and daily life takes over. Cholitas setting up their stalls from early morning, selling fruits, vegetables, and flowers, people moving through their routines as they’ve done forever.

It’s a bit chaotic, very alive, and full of contrasts, and that’s exactly what makes it interesting.

If you like being right in the middle of movement, cultures mixing, and everyday life happening all around you, this is where you’ll feel it the most.

Sopocachi – Creative, Calm, and Effortlessly Cool

From the city center, you can actually just walk downhill from Sagárnaga, and in about 20 minutes, everything starts to change.

The noise fades a little, the streets open up, and the pace slows down.

Sopocachi feels calmer, more relaxed, like a softer side of La Paz. The streets are quieter, with trees, colorful buildings, and a mix of old charm and a more modern feel.

This is where people come to hang out rather than move through. Café life is a big part of it, long breakfasts, slow afternoons, people working on their laptops or just sitting and talking for hours. It’s less about rushing and more about enjoying the moment.

You still feel the character of La Paz, but in a more easygoing and more polished way. There are small boutiques, creative spaces, and little corners that you kind of just stumble upon and end up staying longer than planned.

After the intensity of the center, Sopocachi almost feels like a reset.

If you’re looking for something more chill, more lifestyle, and a place where you can slow down a bit while still being close to everything, this is where you’ll want to be.

Where to Stay – Real Examples

To make it a bit more concrete, here are some real places that match the vibe of each area.

In the City Center

Staying in the center is usually more budget-friendly, with a mix of 2–3 star hotels and hostels. It’s all about being close to the action and having everything right outside your door.

  • Hotel Sagárnaga – One of the most well-known hotels in La Paz, Bolivia. Right in the middle of everything, but with more to it than just location. Downstairs, you’ll find Café del Mundo, which gives the place a social and lively feel, with a mix of travelers and locals coming through. There’s also a restaurant and even massage options, making it a really nice place to land and settle in after a long travel day.

  • Hostal La Posada de la Abuela – A more cozy and traditional option, with a warm, local feel. It’s tucked slightly away from the busiest streets, so you get a bit more calm while still being very central.

  • Wild Rover La Paz – A classic backpacker spot with a very social vibe. It’s known for being lively, easy to meet people, and a good choice if you’re traveling solo and want that sense of community.

In Sopocachi

In Sopocachi, it’s a bit less about classic hotels and more about apartments and longer stays. The vibe here is more relaxed, so where you stay often feels like part of your lifestyle, not just a base.

  • Stannum Boutique Hotel & Spa – A great option if you're looking for luxury hotels in La Paz. It is a more elevated option with amazing views over the city. It’s calm, comfortable, and perfect if you want a bit of luxury while still being close to everything Sopocachi has to offer.

  • Andean Homes – Modern, well-designed apartments that give you that “live like a local” feeling. A great choice if you want your own space, especially for a few days or longer.

  • El Museo Hotel Boutique – A smaller, more hidden gem with an artsy and personal feel. It’s quiet, full of character, and fits perfectly with Sopocachi’s creative and laid-back atmosphere.

So… Where Should You Stay?

I hope this gave you a better idea of where to stay while in La Paz.

Personally, I usually prefer choosing one place and exploring from there, instead of moving around too much during a short stay. It just makes the whole experience feel more grounded.

And even if you pick one area, you can always visit the other; everything is close, and that contrast is part of what makes La Paz so interesting.

Since I spend my days around Sagárnaga, I would probably choose to stay there to really feel that everyday, local side of the city. But in the end, it all comes down to your own travel style and what kind of vibe you’re looking for.

See you around in La Paz.
