Winter in Bolivia: Best Places to Visit, Weather & Travel Tips (2026 Guide)

MAY 27, 2026 || 10 MIN READ

Winter in Bolivia is one of the best times to travel through the country. From snowy Andes landscapes in La Paz to sunny days in Sucre and tropical adventures in the Amazon, the dry season offers clear skies, easier transportation, and incredible scenery across Bolivia.

As a Swede living in La Paz, these are my kind of months coming up. And for travelers, maybe the best time of the year, clear deep blue skies, sunny days, fresh air, very cold nights, and those magical views of the Andes that almost do not look real.

Yesterday the sun was shining, as it almost always does this time of the year. I had been out the whole morning, and when I came back to work, one of the ladies working with me looked outside and said:

“Tonight the rain is coming in.”

I looked up at the blue sky with only a few white clouds floating around, and honestly, if it were not for the fact that she had predicted the weather correctly so many times before, I would never have believed her.

You know, I have told you before, but growing up with my grandparents out on the Altiplano here in the Andes, people had to understand the weather to survive with their cultivations. They needed to know what was coming, and they became experts at reading the smallest signs in nature. And they taught me all of it too, how to watch the clouds moving over the mountains, how the wind changes before the rain arrives, and how nature always gives small warnings if you know where to look.

“So tonight, dress warm,” she told me. “It will be cold.” Impressed, I thanked her for the advice because these things, the ones who know, they know.

And well… last night the rain suddenly came from nowhere.

In El Alto, it started snowing, and during the night, the mountains around us turned white. The Andes are covered in snow again. The most beautiful views surrounding the city, and not even talking about the view from the cable cars this morning, floating above the snowy peaks.

And me? This morning, I was wrapped in a blanket, coffee in hand, looking out over the snow-covered mountains from my window, just realizing once again that she was right. Of course.

But even if we have a few cold days now, the blue skies should be back soon, at least according to my own weather analysis after all these winters I have lived in this country. And as I said, for you, as a traveler, this is really one of the most amazing times to explore this beautiful country.

What Winter in Bolivia Is Really Like

Winter in Bolivia is not what most travelers expect.

Forget grey skies and endless rain. Here, winter arrives with deep blue mornings, bright sunshine, snowy mountain peaks, cold, fresh air, and some of the clearest skies you will ever see in South America.

In La Paz and the Andes, winter is pure magic. The mornings are cold, the nights even colder, but during the day the sun warms the streets, the markets, and the mountains around the city. It is the season when the Andes look their most dramatic, especially after a night of snow in El Alto or high up in the mountains surrounding the city. Riding the cable car over La Paz during winter almost feels unreal, with white peaks in every direction, blue skies above, and the city glowing below.

And maybe that is what makes winter here so special. Bolivia never feels like one single climate or one single world.

Travel a few hours, and everything changes.

In Sucre, the valleys stay soft, green, and spring-like. Days are sunny, warm, and perfect for long walks through white colonial streets and slow afternoons in cafés.

Head down towards the Amazon around Rurrenabaque, and winter feels completely different again. The heat remains, the jungle stays alive and green, but the air becomes drier, making it one of the best times for travelers wanting to explore the pampas, rivers, and rainforest.

And in Santa Cruz, winter arrives gently. Mornings can feel fresh and cool, but the days are still warm, tropical, and filled with sunshine, without the heavy summer heat.

That is what I love most about Bolivia this time of the year.

You can wake up under snowy mountains in La Paz, drink coffee in spring temperatures in Sucre, and a few days later find yourself surrounded by jungle sounds in the Amazon.

Not everywhere in the world changes with the seasons in the same way. Bolivia does it differently.

And maybe that is exactly why winter here becomes unforgettable for travelers.
