First Time in La Paz? 10 Things Every Traveler Should Know Before Visiting
JUNE, 02 2026 || 10 MIN. READ
For those of you who have never been to Café del Mundo in La Paz, I will try to explain what it is.
First of all, it is a place from, to, and for the world. It is inspired by a love for travel and different cultures through food, music, stories, and people. The menu is also inspired by the world. Some dishes come directly from trips I have done myself, plates I simply loved and wanted to share. Others come from the feeling of being a backpacker or traveler and knowing what you sometimes miss from home when you have been on the road for a long time.
At the same time, the menu has changed a lot over the years through conversations with travelers. Listening to people has taught us what travelers miss these days, but it is not only about missing something from home. It is also about discovering something new. A place where you can get inspired by the world, learn something different, and maybe even taste a country you have never visited before.
The café is about food, coffee, long travel talks in the African Room, or relaxing in the Asian pillow corner. But it is also something more than that. It is where a travel community is created. It is where people meet for the first time. Sometimes it is where travelers unexpectedly meet again after crossing paths months earlier in Peru or somewhere else in South America. It is where people exchange travel ideas, inspiration, and tips. A place where travelers from different corners of the world sit around the same table and share stories.
At the same time, both through Travel del Mundo and at Cafe del Mundo, we have become a place that many travelers reach out to before they even arrive in La Paz. We receive questions, travel doubts, and sometimes worries. Because planning a big trip is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. Sometimes you simply want to talk to someone who is already there and can give you a bit of clarity.
So today, I have gone through many of the questions that arrive in our inboxes and messages and picked 10 that come back again and again. Some people ask them before they arrive, while others ask them once they are already here. The interesting thing is that they are often the same questions, but before the trip, they usually come with a bit of stress, while during the trip, they come more from curiosity.
So wherever you are in your journey, still planning at home or already exploring Bolivia, these questions and answers are for you. Hopefully, they will help make your time in La Paz a little easier, a little clearer, and hopefully a great one.
10 Questions Travelers Ask Before Arriving in La Paz
How Many Days Do You Need in La Paz?
I love this question, especially when people ask it before they arrive. It gives you the chance to plan well and avoid one of the most common mistakes travelers make here: not leaving enough time.
To start feeling the city, I would recommend at least 3 days in La Paz. If you are short on time, 2 days can work, but you will probably leave wanting more. The thing is, La Paz is much more than the city itself. Around it, you have mountains, jungle hikes, the famous Death Road, Charquini, Valle de las Ánimas, and many day trips.
Many travelers arrive thinking they only need one day and quickly realize they could easily spend a week here. La Paz has layers, and the more time you have, the more of them you discover.

Is La Paz Safe for Travelers?
This is probably one of the most common questions I get. The short answer is yes, La Paz is generally a safe city for travelers. Like anywhere in the world, it is mostly about using common sense. Take registered taxis or transport recommended by your hotel, avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas, and do not flash expensive cameras, phones, or jewelry.
Most travelers have a great experience here without any problems. The city is full of local life, markets, families, students, and people going about their day. I have lived here for years and love walking around and enjoying the city.
Be aware, stay smart, and enjoy exploring.
How Do You Deal With Altitude in La Paz?
I wish there were a magic answer, but honestly, you never know exactly how your body will react until you arrive. Even if you have visited high altitudes before, this time might feel different. The best advice for everyone is to take it easy during the first couple of days. Walk slower, drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals, and do not plan your toughest activities immediately after arriving.
One personal tip: if possible, I prefer arriving in La Paz in the morning. Having the whole day to slowly settle in always makes me feel better than arriving late at night.
Most people adjust within a few days and then feel completely fine.
The season can also make a difference, especially during the dry winter months when the skies are clearer, and outdoor activities become easier.
Where Should You Stay in La Paz?
That really depends on what kind of traveler you are.
The city center is where we are. It is the most traditional and tourist-friendly area, with souvenir shops, travel agencies, the Witches' Market, colorful streets, and plenty of local life. If you want to feel the real energy of La Paz, this is a great choice.
Sopocachi is the trendy and creative part of the city. You will find cool cafés, bars, cultural spaces, murals, and lots of apartments and Airbnbs. It feels more relaxed and modern.
Zona Sur is the southern part of the city. It sits lower, so the weather is usually warmer. It is also home to many of the city's best hotels, restaurants, and residential neighborhoods.
There is no wrong choice; it simply depends on the experience you are looking for.

How Much Money Do You Need Per Day?
This depends completely on your travel style. You can travel very cheaply in Bolivia if you want to, using local transport, simple hotels, and local restaurants. On the other hand, you can also stay in beautiful hotels, enjoy great restaurants, and take private tours.
Compared to many destinations around the world, Bolivia is still considered a budget-friendly country. Most travelers are surprised by how much they can do without spending a fortune.

Can You Use Credit Cards in Bolivia?
Cash is still king in Bolivia. Especially in markets, traditional neighborhoods, local restaurants, and small villages, cash is often the easiest option. Many Bolivians use QR-code payments, but those generally require a local Bolivian bank account.
Hotels, larger restaurants, supermarkets, and many cafés accept cards, but not everywhere. Sometimes there is also a small extra fee for card payments. My advice is simple: bring a mix of cash and cards. Having some cash on hand will make your trip much easier.
What Are the Must-See Attractions in La Paz?
Wow, this one is difficult because there is so much to choose from. If you only have a short time in the city, I would start with the cable cars. They give you some of the best views of La Paz and help you understand just how massive the city really is.
Next, visit the Witches' Market. It is one of the most unique places in South America and gives you a glimpse into local traditions and beliefs.
My third choice would be Moon Valley. Located just outside the city, it feels like stepping onto another planet. It is an easy way to experience a bit of nature without leaving La Paz for a full day.

How Do You Get From El Alto Airport to La Paz?
When you arrive at the airport, you have several options. The easiest is taking a taxi directly to your accommodation. There are official taxi services available at the airport, and you can also arrange private transportation in advance, check here (link to blog transportation part).
If you are looking for a cheaper option, there are minibuses and connections to the cable car system that can bring you down into the city. Depending on traffic and where you are staying, the journey usually takes around 30 minutes to an hour. During busy times, it can take a little longer.
What Should You Pack for La Paz?
Layers. Lots of layers.

The weather in La Paz can change quickly during the day. You might start the morning wearing a jacket, be in a T-shirt at lunchtime, and need your jacket again in the evening.
A good windproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat are all useful. It is always better to pack a comfortable jacket and good walking shoes. While you can find clothes and outdoor gear in La Paz, it is not always easy to find the right sizes or exactly what you are looking for.
Can You Visit Uyuni, Lake Titicaca, and the Amazon From La Paz?
Absolutely. In fact, many travelers use La Paz as their base for exploring Bolivia. From here, you can easily visit Lake Titicaca and Copacabana, either on a day trip or for a few days. The Salt Flats can be reached by bus or flight, and several tour options are available.
The Amazon is also accessible from La Paz, usually by flight to places like Rurrenabaque before continuing into the jungle. There are also daily bus options from La Paz. The journey is long, but it remains a popular choice among travelers looking to save money and enjoy the adventure along the way.
One of the things I love about La Paz is that it connects you to so many completely different landscapes. In one trip, you can experience mountains, lakes, salt deserts, cloud forests, and the Amazon rainforest.
