Best Things to Do in Sopocachi, La Paz: Cafés, Culture, Food and Views

October 6, 2026 || 8 min read(updated October 6, 2026)

A slower afternoon, a good coffee and another side of La Paz. These are my favourite ways to enjoy Sopocachi, from its creative corners and restaurants to viewpoints and relaxed evenings out.

The centre of La Paz, where I’m sitting and writing this blog post right now, is one of my favourite areas of the city.

This is the traditional part of La Paz. The markets, the people selling flowers, fruit and vegetables on the street, the souvenir shops, the colourful umbrellas, the Witches’ Market and all those little corners where you really feel that you are travelling. That feeling of: yes, I am actually in Bolivia.

A lot of travellers say something similar when they arrive here. “This is what I imagined South America would feel like.” And I understand them. It is beautiful, intense, colourful and very alive.

But one of the things I love about La Paz is that the city is not only one feeling. It has so many different areas, with completely different moods, all inside the same city.

So today I want to talk about another one of my favourite neighbourhoods: Sopocachi.

If you have time in La Paz, I think it is always worth seeing the city from more than one angle. And Sopocachi, with its cultural side, cafés, restaurants, old houses, bars and calm little streets, might surprise you.

So if you have a free afternoon, or just want to see another side of La Paz, head to Sopocachi. Here are some ideas for what to do, where to eat and how to enjoy this part of the city without rushing it.

Sopocachi, the Creative Side of La Paz

Sopocachi is one of the most interesting neighbourhoods in La Paz. It gives you a completely different feeling from the historic centre, but it is still close enough to visit during a normal day in the city. It sits between the traditional centre and the southern zones, which makes it a good base if you want to move around without feeling too far from anything.

The area feels a bit calmer than the streets around Sagárnaga, San Francisco and the Witches’ Market, but it is not quiet or sleepy. It still has cafés, restaurants, small bars, cultural spaces and everyday city life. Many travellers choose to stay here because there are Airbnbs, apartments, boutique-style hotels and older buildings that give the neighbourhood a softer and more local feeling. It is also popular with digital nomads, remote workers and travellers who want a comfortable place to spend a few days.

During the day, Sopocachi is the kind of place where you can take your laptop to a café, walk between plazas, have a slow lunch or visit a small cultural space. There are good places to work, read or think about the next part of your trip, especially if you need a pause from the strong rhythm of the markets and the busy centre. The neighbourhood has a creative feeling, with galleries, small shops, music spaces, events and restaurants that make it feel like one of the cultural pockets of the city.

One of the nice things about Sopocachi is that old houses, modern buildings, local shops, cafés and hidden terraces exist side by side. The area feels layered, but still easy to understand. In the evening, the neighbourhood changes mood and becomes one of my favourite areas in La Paz for dinner, wine, cocktails or a relaxed night out.

It is not as touristy as the centre, and that is exactly why many people like it. It shows a more local, urban and everyday version of La Paz. For travellers arriving from lower altitude, Sopocachi can also feel like a good place to slow down, breathe a little and enjoy the city without walking through the most intense streets straight away. You are still at high altitude here, so take the hills gently.

You come here for coffee, food, culture, bars, viewpoints and that feeling of discovering a neighbourhood that is part of the city’s normal life, not only its tourist route. Sopocachi gives you another angle of La Paz without taking you far away. If the historic centre shows you the traditional heart of La Paz, Sopocachi shows you its creative, urban and everyday side.

Alexander Coffee, Plaza Abaroa

One of the nicest things about coffee in Sopocachi is that the best places are often the ones you find by accident. Walk a block or two off the main corners and you will pass small cafés behind plain doors, with two tables, a plant in the window and someone roasting their own beans inside. Half of them never show up on a map. Bring a little time, turn down a street you don't know and follow the smell of coffee. Some of my best mornings in La Paz started exactly like that.

Where to Stay in Sopocachi

Sopocachi has plenty of Airbnbs and apartments alongside its hotels, which is one reason many travellers like staying here. It can feel like having a small local base in La Paz, close to cafés, restaurants and everyday city life. We also recommend checking Andean Homes, one of our favourite stay options in the area.

Another Side of La Paz, at Your Own Pace

Sopocachi is not a place you need to “complete.” It is more a neighbourhood to walk, taste, sit, look around and slowly understand. If the centre gives you the traditional and colourful side of La Paz, Sopocachi gives you the creative, urban and everyday side. A very good mix, if you ask me.

Opening hours, menus and events can change, so check with individual venues before visiting.
